CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Gavin’s energy was drained.

The fight had been waging for what felt like days, though he knew it was not that long. Every time he had a chance to rest, it felt as if another enchantment was triggered, warning him of another impending attack so that he had to protect the city once more.

He didn’t fight alone, though.

Very few people from Yoran came to fight with him, though the Leier, several El’aras soldiers, and Gaspar did. They were all skilled, which mattered more than the numbers.

A strange enchantment made out of what looked like a tree swept razor-like branches at him, though they did not seem to have metal embedded in them as others had. Gavin had to duck beneath the branches and stab toward the trunk like he had when fighting the seeker trees.

A pair of Leier streaked toward the tree, dropping underneath one of the branches swinging toward them and dancing upward with their blades a blur. They were skilled, but not nearly as skilled as Imogen.

Still, Gavin could tell that they had been fighting and training with her. He recognized the technique, even if he didn’t know what the patterns were called. People who celebrated fighting the way the Leier did would have names for them. Probably something pompous. He had worked with enough people who had their own fighting styles over the years that he had come to know dozens of names for dozens of patterns. For the most part, that was all they were, though. Patterns.

That was what Gavin kept in mind as he fought.

He jumped, barely missing a branch sweeping at him. He carved his blade up, pushing power out through the end of the weapon and feeling resistance against him. As he did, he swept the blade back down again and hit a branch. There was a strange sound of splitting wood that mixed with something he would almost call a scream. That was different than the seeker trees. They had cried out when he had attacked them, but not in the same way.

Gavin tried to twist, but a branch struck him and sent him tumbling away. He rolled and bounded upward, only to see a Leier who had been riding on a renral dart forward. The man was a blur of movement, a sword master more skilled than Imogen had been before she left, though Gavin doubted that this man was her rival now. He flowed beneath one of the branches, swept up around another, and danced free again, entirely unscathed.

“What’s your name?”

The man frowned at him. “Jorend.”

“I’m Gavin Lorren.”

“I know you, Chain Breaker. The general speaks highly of you.”

Gavin smiled. The general. He’d have to get used to Imogen being referred to like that.

A tree moved toward them, speeding faster than Gavin would’ve expected. Two others marched next to it.

“We have an entire forest that moves?” Gavin muttered.

“This is not the first time we have faced something like this,” Jorend said.

Gavin regarded him. “It’s the first time I have. I dealt with trees that attacked me out west, but I think they were defending themselves.
